At long last, I
have received a large, poster-sized picture of the B-17 crash at Lavenham in
February 1945, which Doug and the rest of the Portsch crew were extremely
lucky to walk away from.
Under the right
wing and No.3 engine can be seen the remains of the cement mixer lorry which
the Brit workmen had been using to repair the perimeter track. As you might
expect when confronted with 20 tons of oncoming B-17 bomber, the men scattered
like f.H. and there is an amusing note in the Control Tower log which says the
foreman i/c of the workmen asked the Duty Officer to let him know when that
runway was in use again !!!
Hope you find them
as interesting as I did !
